I'm a reader of several FIRE (financial independence, retire early) blogs, including the well-written Our Next Life blog, and wasn't sure what I would learn that was new. Turns out, the book is very balanced in getting a reader to look outward to learn about the nuts and bolts of work-optional life and to look inward at what factors would make such a person (this person) want to pursue such a life. The book starts with an introspective effort to craft one's money mission statement by identifying common themes across different times in our lives. I had a great time reliving my 12- and 21- year-old dreams (although I'll take the life I have now, thanks very much). It then delves into the essential components of a financial plan. The book really shines here: the money-related details are presented efficiently and authoritatively. The part on healthcare costs is a standout for its fair treatment of the various options that are currently available. The part on "bulletproofing" plans shone as well. The emphasis on the "non-penny pinching" from the title is evident as Hester focuses her tips on containing the biggest expenses (housing and healthcare in retirement, and housing and transportation in pre-retirement) as well as giving practical tips to further accelerate progress. The final section of the book transitions back to the reader's original vision of work-optional life and advises how to "make the big leap," with gentle reminders for self-care and living a purpose-filled life.This book is highly recommended for those who are curious about FIRE as well as those who are at any point in the accumulation phase. A lot of "early retirement" books are written for high income earners and people who are already financially secure. This guide is useful, practical, and can apply to anyone regardless of current financial situation. It has exercises to help you visualize what you actually want as well as the ways to calculate how to make the money work to get to financial independence or early retirement or even how to make traditional retirement be what you want it to be. Tanja's story is compelling and she includes several other stories that are also inspirational (and useful to get many different ways of doing it). Well written. Easy to read. As someone that is not super close to early retirement, I'm excited to work through the exercises every couple of years along the way to make sure I'm on the right path and have considered all the things.

In Part 1, Tanja starts off by explaining what Early Retirement/"Work Optional" life is and challenging you to imagine who you are without work. If you 're stuck, she gives you the cheat code to get unstuck through a series of exploratory questions. You can tell she used to be a consultant because her questions are empathetic in nature, but not wimpy. They make you confront the fact that your current lifestyle and your ideal one may be at odds. The good news is, you probably don't have to wait until retirement to reconcile some of that! In our opinion, the book is worth that act of self-discovery alone.Part 2 is all about planning and this is where thangs got REAL. Tanja doesn't shy away from the fact that none of us have a crystal ball. Instead, she explains how to introduce flexibility into your plan through a number of continencies. She puts all the uncomfortable out in the open where it can be resolved. We also loved how she took the most mundane financial products and gave us a reason to care about them by explaining the tangible benefits in both the short AND long term. We've been in the Accumulation stage of Early Retirement for several years and this section gave us a lot to think about. Turns out, we still have work to do!Part 3 was probably our favorite. It's where she talks about the Big Leap and all the things you need to think about in your final months of traditional employment. We loved the emphasis on spiritual and mental wellness. Tanja reminds us that Health Insurance and employer-match 401ks aren't the only things that are tightly wound to our jobs. Work provides so many emotional rewards like positive feedback and social/intellectual engagement and you don't magically just stop needing those things. Post-retirement, you really have to figure out a way to build a life that still checks those boxes and she walks you though some actionable steps.Overall, this was a FANTASTIC book and one that we'll reference many many mannnny times over the years as a textbook. Highly recommend!

Getting to ready to start the second read of Work Optional. The first time through was quick, and I found it to be a great, easy read! The second time through will be slower and more strategic. I was excited to receive and read this book after finding the ournextlife.com blog and embracing the phased retirement concept. Tanja’s writing style and topic resonated with me, not to mention being timely. Having just retired early at 47, I wish I would’ve had this book a lot sooner in my career. But even those of us that are already living a work optional life can gain many nuggets from this book. Skip the parts you don’t need or that may not apply to where you are in your journey, but don’t skip part 1!! Whether you were pursuing early retirement or already living in retirement, don’t skip part 1 if you really want to design a work optional life that fits who you are and what you are passionate about. Tanja does a great job of asking the questions that we must be able to answer in order to make this quest successful.

Mein Freund und ich haben uns diese adventskalender Geschichte gekauft, weil wir gehofft hatten jeden abend etwas spannendes zu lesen und uns die Weihnachtszeit zu versüßen. Leider war diese Geschichte garnicht unser Fall.....Sehr offentlich was passieren wird und teilweise langweilige Erzählungen über banale Dinge in dieser Geschichte. Die Verpackung ist sehr schön und man kann an jeder Karte ein Band einfädeln ( diese sind mit enthalten)und diese dann z.b an den Baum hängen.

Der Adventskalender kam super bei meiner Freundin an. Sie liest sehr gern und damit konnte ich mit diesem nichts falsch machen ;) Allerdings hat meine Freundin bereits nach zwei Drittel durchschaut, wer der Täter ist. Nächstes Jahr wird es hoffentlich spannender und nicht so schnell durchschaubar, dann gibts auch fünf Sterne ;) Aber an sich eine super Sache, die Süßigkeiten-Adventskalender sind ja eh nix besonderes mehr.

Paket kam gut verpackt und sehr rasch bei mir an.Habe diesen "Krimi" als Gechenk für meine Schwester gekauft und war schon sehr gespannt.Die ganze Kanzlei hat jeden Tag die kurz Geschichten gelesen und war total begeistert.Würde ich sofort nochmal kaufen.

Die Idee an sich ist super. Ich wollte meinem Freund einmal einen etwas anderen Adventskalender schenken und er hat sich auch sehr über "Apfel, Zimt und Todeshauch" gefreut. Jedoch war die Geschichte nicht ganz so spannend wie erwartet. Besonders das Ende hat enttäuscht.

Der Adventskalender war ein Geschenk an meine Mama. Da sie gerne liest, auch Krimis, fand ich es total passend.Die Handlung kann ich nicht beurteilen da ich die Geschichte nicht gelesen habe. Das Geschenk kam aber gut an. Eine tolle Idee für Lese-Fans.

An sich ist die Idee eines Geschichten - Adventskalenders ja gut. Aber die Geschichte selbst ist einfach nur abgrundtief schlecht.Wir haben es tatsächlich bis Weihnachten durchgezogen, aber ich kann mich wirklich nicht entscheiden was das schlimmste an der Geschichte ist. Die faden Charaktere, die Längen in der Mitte oder das vorhersehbare und öde Ende.Wenigstens weiß ich jetzt schon, was ich beim Schrottwichteln nächstes Jahr los werde.

Mal wieder ein toller Adventskalender, der nicht nur optisch ein Blickfang ist (ich hänge ihn immer in einem Zweig auf) sondern auch jeden Tag im Advent ein tolles Highlight ist.

Meine Mutter hat den Kalender schon am 14. zuende gelesen und ich habe Ihr dann zu Weihnachten gratuliert (scherzhaft natürlich). Sie konnte es einfach nicht aushalten und musste lesen wie es weiter geht, also ... Zweck erfüllt... 5 Sterne :-)

Das Buch ist an sich in Ordnung, habe aber spezifische, optimale Einstellungen in Bezug auf S/W vermisst, das war der Grund meines Kaufes. Es gibt mehr und vermutlich gute Tipps zur weiteren Bildbearbeitung.

Ich habe mir dieses Buch bestellt, da ich schon einige Bücher der Serie "Digital fotografieren" gelesen habe und mit dem Inhalt, sowie den erläuterungen zufrieden war. Leider ist dieses Buch etwas knapp gehalten, mit einigen hilfreichen Ideen, wie man mit hilfe von Photoshop Digitale Farbbilder in Schwarzweiss umzuwandeln kann. Generell ist es aber leider nicht besonders umfassend und wird vielen Fotografen auch nichts neues sagen.Fortgeschrittene Fotografen, werden sicherlich enttäuscht sein aber ich würde es auf jeden Fall für Anfänger, die sich für die S/W fotografie intressieren empfehlen.

Digital Fotografieren "Schwarz Weiß" ist ein gutes Buch zum Thema. Aufgeteilt in fünf Kapitel bietet es für einsteiger in die Digitale Fotografie eine gute Anleitung um Bilder in Schwarz-Weiß umzuwandeln. Das Einführungskapitel bietet einen kurzen Abriss zur Technik digitaler Kameras. Kapitel zwei führt in das "fotografische Handwerk" ein. Digitale Bildbearbeitung schließt sich an. Das wohl Interessanteste Kapitel für Fotografen erklärt wie traditionelle Dunkelkammertechniken zur Schwarz- Weißentwicklung digital nachgestellt werden können. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einem Kapitel zum Druck und zur Präsentation der Bilder.Insgesamt bietet das Buch einen guten Einstieg in die digitale Schwarz- Weißfotografie. Die Kapitel sind mit schönen Bildern aufbereitet und erklären das Thema gut bis sehr gut. Die Tipps sind nicht nur für Besitzer von Photoshop nachvollziehbar.Somit werden nicht nur Einsteiger diese Buch genießen können sondern auch erfahrenen Fotografen.Deswegen 5 Sterne.

Leider keine Neuigkeiten, sehr oberflächlich und nur etwas für absolute Anfänger. Ich bezweifel jedoch, daß sich Anfänger ein solches Buch kaufen würden.Schlechte Einteilung der Kapitel, viele große Bilder und wenig Text sind die Merkmale dieses Buches.War ein Fehlkauf.

Ich habe schon 8 Ausgaben von Digital fotografieren und bin nich enteuscht worden von dem Inhalt. Die Ausgabe Schwarz Weiss überaschte mich weil ich hatte schon "Schwarz Weiss /003 ". Das Buch war auch noch billiger und weil der Umschlag und die Grösse anders waren bestellte ich das Buch .Doch staunte ich bei der Lieferung die ersten 10 Seiten waren umgeschlagen und mit eingebunden.Als ich die Seiten gelöst hatte erkannte ich dass ich das Buch jetzt zweimal hatte,nur das erste war fast viermal teurer aber ganz.
